Cocos Island Cuckoo: Cuccyzus ferrugineus
Body: It is 30 centimeters long, and has a grey crown with a black mask on its face. Its has bright yellow wings and a black tail, with a black beak with a yellow mandible. They only live on the small Cocos Island 500 kilometers off the coast of Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean.
Behavior: It feeds on insects and anole lizards, often inhabiting second growth forests, streamside vine tangles, and Hibiscus thickets. There is no known observation of nesting or other behaviors of this species.
Population: The Cocos Island Cuckoo is clasified as Vulnerable, with numbers under 1,000. Their population has limited growth because of their small area of inhabitance and environment with almost nowhere else to go. Introduced herbivores to Cocos Island are threatening the habitat, however there is no known evidence of a decline in population, and the birds seem to be resilient.
Song: The Cocos Island Cuckoo makes a guttural k'k'k'k'ru'hoo, and a deep, dry kcha repeated 5-8 times, sometimes followed by rolling rattles.
