Ecotourism
Ecotourism has developed into a major and dominating industry for Costa Rica. Ecotourism is where a country attracts visitors on the basis of their incredible wildlife and nature, which Costa Rica has a lot to offer: mountains, cloud forests, beautiful beaches, rivers, lowlands, mangroves, and wildlife preserves among many other attractions. Costa Rica is a model for the benefits of an ecotourism economy for developing countries, as it is one of Central and South America's more affluent, functional, and less corrupt countries. Ecotourism forces Costa Rica to preserve and protect is natural beauty more than ever, because its whole economy rotates around it. Over 27% of Costa Rica's land is devoted to preserving land, including Wildlife Reserves, National Parks, and Forest Preserves to name a few. In fact, there is a five cent gasoline tax, which goes toward giving the "Ticos" (as the people there are called) incentive to tree farm instead of environmentally-destructive cattle farming.
